The Sudanese Platform for Civil Society (SHAMS) is a coordination umbrella of Sudanese Civil Society Organizations founded in March 2009 as a result of positive efforts of coordination and joint endeavors between 36 civil society organizations meant with electoral awareness raising, education and training to the CPA and the Interim National Constitution 2005 and the National Elections Act .

Announcement of establishing a Sudanese platform

On 26 March 2009, around 36 Sudanese activist representing national civil societies, research centers, cultural and academic bodies from Khartoum, Dongola, Nyala, Zalingi, Deleng, Shendi, Kassala, Wad- Medani, Port-Sudan, Juba and Yambio; had discussed for more than a year the issue of creating a Sudanese electoral observation platform. The group announced last week foundation of the “Platform” which considered a first coalition for electoral monitoring and observation includes civil society organizations and its activists to coordinate the efforts and develop the forum’s structure and its affective administration. The main platform's objective is to work together and share ideas, to achieve impartial election in Sudan. The “Platform” passed honorable declaration and code of conduct and disciplining , In partnership with Fredrech ebert , the group of national civil societies had organized a number of trainings in some areas that concern constitutional rights, Comprehensive Peace Agreement, and election observation questions, so the establishing group did many specialized training, seminars and workshops in some Sudan’s States, this activities covered most important social groups in the communities and government officials such as teachers, youth, political activists, journalists, judges, lawyers, police personnel, women leaders, local community leaders, actors, administrative officers, musicians, painters..et,The Sudanese Civil Society Organizations’ Platform for Elections has been founded on the basis of shared coordination of activities and cooperation between civil society organizations working in the field of awareness raising and training on issues of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and the Interim National Constitution of 2005, and the Elections Law of 2008 , The Platform forms a nucleus for coordination, exchange of information and expertise, and aims at the strengthening and development of alliances working on voter education and awareness raising on the importance of elections and its observation and monitoring. It consists of 36 civil society organizations active in the field of elections: research centers, cultural centers and societies in Khartoum, Juba, Dongola, Shendi, Nyala, Zalingi, Elfashir, Eldilling, Gedaref, Kassala, Port Sudan and Madani
